RADIOLOGY SPECIALIST

Prof. Dr. Saim Yılmaz

Prof. Dr. Saim Yılmaz was born in 1962 in Antalya. After completing his primary, secondary, and high school education in Antalya, he ranked third in Antalya in the ÖSYM exam in 1979 and gained admission to Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine. He graduated from medical school in 1985, served in mandatory service, and then began his residency in Pediatrics at Zeynep Kamil Hospital in Istanbul. In 1988, he passed the TUS exam again and started his residency in Radiology at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine. He became a specialist in 1992, an assistant professor in 1994, an associate professor in 1998, and a professor in 2004.

Since becoming a radiology specialist in 1992, Prof. Yılmaz has worked in the field of interventional radiology, a therapeutic subspecialty of radiology. During this time, he has been associated with many interventional radiology centers in the USA and Europe, participated in over 100 conferences and symposiums both domestically and internationally, and authored more than 70 scientific articles, which have received over 600 citations. He has presented over 100 conference papers, given more than 50 invited talks at conferences, and has won a total of 7 scientific awards.

A study published by Prof. Yılmaz in 1998 became the third most cited article in Turkey and the fifth most cited in Europe in the field of radiology. Due to this article, he was invited to give courses at European Radiology Congresses for two consecutive years. In subsequent years, he focused his research on peripheral artery disease and began applying the “subintimal angioplasty” and “transpopliteal angioplasty” techniques for treating long leg artery blockages in Turkey. For two studies published in 2001 and 2003, he was invited to give courses at the European Congress of Interventional Radiology.

In 2003, he introduced endovenous laser treatment for venous insufficiency and varicose veins, a method that had just emerged globally, in Turkey. He also developed and introduced “ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and miniflebectomy” techniques for the same condition. Additionally, he implemented the “femoral block” and “sciatic block” methods to prevent pain during laser procedures and presented these at radiology conferences. Prof. Yılmaz has authored numerous articles and delivered conference talks on non-surgical treatment methods for varicose veins. One of these articles was recognized as the best scientific work of the year by the journal in which it was published, another received the second-best conference presentation award, and another was honored with a “cum laude” award at the European Congress of Interventional Radiology.

Since 2005, Prof. Yılmaz has extensively applied the “embolization” technique for the non-surgical treatment of uterine fibroids and adenomyosis using angiography. He has shared his experiences on this topic at radiology and obstetrics conferences. He also implemented the “Superior hypogastric ganglion block” method, which significantly alleviates pain following the embolization procedure, and introduced it to the radiology community.

Starting in 2011, Prof. Yılmaz began working with the Mediterranean Oncology team at Memorial&Medstar hospitals. During this time, he applied new treatments that destroy tumors using methods like heating or cooling, as well as through angiography. He initiated cryoablation and nano-knife treatments in Turkey. His work on the nano-knife treatment for pancreatic cancer received first-place awards at radiology and interventional radiology conferences in 2013 and 2014.

In 2018, Prof. Yılmaz left the Memorial&Medstar Hospitals group and has since conducted all his treatments at Varisson Radiology Clinics, which he founded and owns, in Antalya and Istanbul. These clinics employ a total of 5 doctors and 16 staff members. You can find the addresses and phone numbers of these clinics on our contact page.

Prof. Yılmaz is proficient in English (KPDS: 97), French (KPDS: 92), and German (KPDS: 82). He is married and has two children.
