Prof. Dr. Emel Durmaz graduated from Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine in 1992. After completing her radiology residency at Ankara Yüksek İhtisas Hospital, she started to work as a radiology specialist at Akdeniz University in 2000. She worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiology between 2006-2012. In 2012, she received the title of associate professor and continued her academic life as a professor after 2017.
Throughout her career at Akdeniz University, she has worked on the diagnosis of breast diseases, breast biopsy methods and non-invasive treatment procedures. In addition to having more than 40 international and national articles so far, Prof. Dr. Durmaz presented more than 30 invited lectures and more than 100 scientific presentations at national or international meetings. In 2015, she was invited to Euroson School (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, EFSUMB) to present US-guided treatments in breast and breast biopsy techniques. In 2017, she was invited to European Ultrasound Congress (EFSUMB) held in Slovenia to present her experience in probably benign breast lesions, breast cysts and pediatric breast lesions. She also gave some lectures about breast diseases under the ERASMUS program in Milan, Italy.
Besides, having experience in obstetric sonography, Prof. Dr. Durmaz has served as an instructor in scientific courses organized by the Turkish Ultrasonography Association and the Turkish Radiology Association. She has contributed to the training of many residents in radiology in Akdeniz University Department of Radiology and supervised many theses in medicine.
Prof. Dr. Durmaz's study on benign breast masses were deemed worthy of first prizes at the 18th European Ultrasound Congress (Euroson2006, PDF) and the 8th National Breast Diseases Congress (2005, PDF). In addition, she received an honorable mention at the 26th National Radiology Congress for her study (PDF) on sclerosing adenosis disease. Dr. Durmaz took part as a researcher “TÜBİTAK and BAP projects” on the construction and testing of the breast laser tomography system.
Prof. Dr. Durmaz has memberships in Turkish Radiology Society, Turkish Ultrasonography Society, Turkish Radiology Society Breast Sub-Study Unit, European Breast Groups Society (EUSOBI), International Cancer Society (UICC), European Radiology Society (ESR).
Apart from breast diseases, specific topics such as diagnosis of thyroid diseases, ultrasonography in carpal tunnel syndrome, Doppler ultrasonography, obstetric ultrasonography and treatment of varicose veins are within her field of specializations.
Prof. Dr. Emel Durmaz has more than 22 years of experience in the diagnosis of breast diseases. She still continues her scientific/professional works at Varisson Radiology Center.
